Note From the ICEVI Secretary:

In less than a year from now, the ICEVI will be having its 11th Quinquennial Conference in the Netherlands to celebrate fifty golden years of its very eventful existence. The note that follows contains information about this Conference and I urge you on behalf of all the Officers of the ICEVI to publicise it widely. Send in your abstracts and encourage your colleagues, friends in the field to send in their contributions. Let us work toward making the Conference a huge success and one that has Papers of high quality and of great learning value.

Conference aims

New Visions: Moving Toward an Inclusive Community

- To provide an up-to-date international overview of the education and rehabilitation practices for children and young people with a visual impairment.

- To facilitate an exchange of ideas, experiences and practices on a formal and informal basis.

- To promote dialogue on the issues surrounding the theme at the highest level.

- To enable participants to hear and question world renowned speakers.

The Programme Committee has identified three main areas of focus:

Welcome to the Conference

Host Committee

As the chairperson of the Dutch Host Committee, I am pleased to invite you to participate in the 11th ICEVI World Conference, which will take place from Saturday 27 July to Friday 2 August 2002 in the Leeuwenhorst Congress Centre, Noordwijkerhout, the Netherlands. This Conference will offer opportunities to meet each other, exchange experiences and information for those who are involved with raising, educating and rehabilitating children and young people with a visual impairment.

The theme of this Conference New Visions: Moving Toward an Inclusive Community lends itself learning through experiences elsewhere in the world. The Host Committee expects many participants, especially because the ICEVI will celebrate its 50th Anniversary during this Conference.

The ICEVI was founded in 1952 in the Netherlands. In the last few years the ICEVI has been pro-active in stimulating international exchanges and through that contributing to the access of equal educational opportunity for people with visual impairment. The Host Committee is doing its very best to organize a wonderful conference. However, much of that success will be related to your contributions as participant.

Programme Committee

On behalf of the Programme Committee for the ICEVI 11th World Conference, it is my pleasure to invite you to respond to this call for papers by submitting an abstract no later than 1 October, 2001.

The theme of the conference "New Visions: Moving Toward an Inclusive Community" has been chosen to promote an international exchange of ideas, research, practices and future trends. It will embrace the last decade of international policy on inclusion for all drawing upon such documents as UN Convention on the Rights of the Child, UNESCO's Salamanca Statement and the Dakar Declaration.

The Programme Committee is seeking high quality presentations in the form of:

- Stimulating papers
- Interactive workshops
- The latest in research
- Poster sessions
- New video and CD Rom materials

We look forward receiving your abstract no later than 1 October 2001.

Important Information

Venue:

The conference will take place in

the Leeuwenhorst Congress Centre,

Noordwijkerhout, the Netherlands.

The Leeuwenhorst is a worldclass congress centre with excellent meeting rooms, restaurants, recreation and hotel facilities. More detailed information about the centre and how to register will be given in the registration brochure, which will be send in November 2001.

Fee:

The conference fee covers full participation, hotel accommodation and breakfast, coffee/tea during breaks, lunches, dinners, social events and closing dinner. (only during conference days).

The early fee is approx. Euro 975 for 1 person (single room).

If you share a double room the fee will be approx. Euro 925 per person.

More detailed information will follow in the registration brochure.

Languages:

The official language for the Conference will be English. All announcements, programmes, abstracts and conference proceedings will be in English.

Presentations may be held in English and Spanish.

Plenary Sessions: English with simultaneous translation into Spanish and vice versa.

Parallel sessions: English with Spanish translation in some sessions and vice versa.

Abstract Submission

Requirements for Abstract Submission

The selection of abstracts, posters, video and CD-Rom presentations will be made by the Programme Committee based on submissions utilising the 'Official Abstract Form'. This form can be ordered from the Conference Office (see below for address).

The 'Official Abstract Form' must be sent to the Conference Office in the Netherlands ultimately on

1 October 2001.

Please submit the original form plus seven copies and an additional copy on a 3.5" diskette (MS Word).

Abstracts should be typed or printed using a black ribbon or a laser or inkjet printer with single-line spacing. Use a simple font, 12 point. Your abstract should not exceed 200 words.

If accepted, the abstract will appear in print in the exact form it is received.

Programme Presentations

Lectures

Scientific or professional abstracts, no longer than 200 words, describing presentations of 15-20 minutes duration are solicited by the Programme Committee. All abstracts should be linked to one of the 3 focus areas and one of the 13 topics described under Conference Aims in this brochure.

Example:

School Years: Low Vision

The introduction of low vision devices to a group of grade 7 pupils for leisure activities'

Abstracts on similar topics will be grouped together within a parallel session. It is also possible that presenters organize their own series of papers on a particular topic. This must be made clear at the time of submission.

The following equipment will be available for the presentations: single slide projection, video and overhead.

Posters

A poster presentation of research findings, special projects, programme descriptions, educational materials or equipment.

The presenter will have approximately 1.5 hours to interact with participants and to answer questions.

Workshops

A group meeting for:

- A more in-depth discussion of one topic.

- An aspect of that topic.

- An opportunity for a 'hands-on' demonstration.

For example 'A new braille reading test for primary pupils'.

Simultaneous translation is not possible in these workshops.

Videos (VHS-PAL format) and CD-Roms

An opportunity to introduce new materials to participants.
