LETTER FROM THE VICE PRESIDENT

I am very pleased to have the opportunity to introduce myself. I am married with three children and I am a lecturer in the School of Education at the University of Birmingham in England. I work in a centre called VICTAR (Visual Impairment Centre for Teaching and Research).  My work involves training teachers of the visually impaired and currently we have over 100 teachers of children with a visual impairment training with us in Birmingham from all over the United Kingdom through our distance education programme. I am also involved in research and my particular interests are literacy through touch and the planning and implementation of services for children with a visual impairment in developing countries.

I have worked with teachers of the visually impaired from all over the world who have studied in Birmingham and have visited schools and services in Africa, Eastern Europe and America.

Before coming to work at the University I was a teacher of children with a visual impairment at a special school in Liverpool and then became an itinerant teacher supporting children in mainstream schools.

In my role as vice-president I am responsible for the publications produced by ICEVI and I am looking forward to the next edition of the Educator due out in December which has as its theme “Early Intervention”.

The edition will follow the successful new format developed by my predecessor Harry Svensson and his publications committee, including articles from practitioners around the world and contributions on the topic from parents. I’d like to take this opportunity to thank Harry for all the hard work he put into the Educator.

I am pleased to say that most of the publications committee have agreed to keep up their good work so I feel optimistic that we can maintain Harry’s high standards.

On behalf of the publications committee we look forward to receiving your feedback, suggestions and contributions to the Educator, the website and any other aspects of ICEVI information.

I look forward to hearing from you all !

Please contact the Vice-President, ICEVI for publication of articles in the Educator.  For advertisement, the Secretary General may be contacted  - Steve McCall
